Windows
XP Settings and Troubleshooting
To access settings in Windows XP, Double Click on My Computer.
In My Computer, on the left hand side you will see Network and Dial-up
Connections, (it should look like a html link). In here you should see your
icon. Right click on this icon and left click on properties.
The General Properties sheet will come up. In this area you are allowed
to change the phone number, add alternate numbers, configure the modem you use
to dial, configure dialing rules, and display the icon when a connection is
made. You can use Alternates to add alternate dialup numbers. You should leave
Use dialing rules unchecked.

The Options tab contains the information pertaining to the actual dialup.
Display progress while connecting shows the dialing sequence and what point
the process has achieved. Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc.
brings up the dialing prompt (fig. 1). Include Windows Logon domain is
not needed. Prompt for phone number will show the number when the connection
box comes up.
Under Redialing options there are four choices: Redial attempts, Time
between redial attempts, Idle time before hanging up, and Redial if line
is dropped.
Redial attempts: This tells windows how many times to dial before it
gives up and no longer will dial a connection with out your input.
Time between redial attempts: How long windows will wait before dialing
again.
Idle time before hanging up: How long windows will stay connected to
the internet if you are not actively using the connection. The best setting
for this is never.
Redial if line is dropped: Check this if you lose your connection either
due to call waiting, or phone line issues.
The next tab is Security. The only things necessary on this page is
the choice of Typical (recommended settings) and Allow unsecured password
under Validate my identity as follows:.

The Networking Tab contains information about protocols for dial-up. You should
have Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), File Client for Microsoft Networks,
and you may or may not have File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.
You also are able check your properties, and if needed enable DNS.

A common error in Windows XP is error 733, The PPP control
protocol for this network protocol is not available on the server.
To fix this problem click on the Settings button. To fix the problem
uncheck Enable LCP extensions, and Negotiate multi-link for single
link connections.

The Advanced tab contains information about Internet Connection Firewall.
We do not support this.

To adjust modem settings, under the General tab, click
Configure. This will bring up the Modem Configuration box. There
are a few options to adjust:
Maximum speed (bps): should be set to 57600
Enable hardware flow control: should be checked
Enable modem error control: should be unchecked, this will usually uncheck
Enable modem compression.
The bottom two options are your choice, they are not needed.

DNS issues in Windows XP are change in a different way than
Windows 9x. It's much easier in Windows XP. The first thing you need to do is
bring up the properties in Network and Dialup Connections,
and click the Networking tab. Under Networking, there is a section
titled Components checked are used by this connection. There you should
see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Highlight this and click properties,
the next screen will appear.
The first option, Obtain an IP address automatically, should be highlighted.
Below that, Use the following DNS server addresses should be as follows:
Preferred DNS server: 204.97.128.2
Alternate DNS server: 208.20.65.97
Click Advanced...
This will bring up the Advanced TCP/IP Settings box.
The first tab is General, we can skip this and go to
the DNS tab.
Under DNS, Click Add...
You will see a box that asks you to type some numbers in. You
will need to do this twice.
The first number is 204.97.128.2
The second is 208.20.65.97

Below that is Append these DNS suffixes (in order), Click
Add...

Type in acmenet.net, and click Add

Click OK until you're back in Network and dial-up
connections, Reboot, and you are done.
