Netscape Communicator 4.0x Settings


To get to the Communicator configuration, open Communicator and click on "Edit," then "Preferences..."





Open the "Mail & Groups" branch by clicking on the "+" sign next to the name.  Then click on "Identity"  For this window,  you should have the following fields filled out.  For the "Your Name" section, you can enteer anything you like.  It is the only field that you can use capitals.  Everything else must be in lower case letters.  In the "Email address" and "Reply-to address" you should enter your ACMENET email address.





By clicking on the "Mail Server" link you will be presented with this screen.  Make sure your username is spelled correctly and in lower case letters in the "Mail server user name" field.  The "Outgoing mail" server for ACMENET is mail.acmenet.net  And the "Incoming mail server" is pop.acmenet.net
  These are the names for ACMENET's mail servers.



The incoming mail server is a POP3 server.  POP stands for "Post Office Protocol"  it pulls your mail in to you.  The outgoing mail server pushes the mail out into the Internet. It is a SMTP server, which means "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol."



For this window, enter news.acmenet.net for the "News (NNTP) server". This service will require a Username and Password when sending and receiving newsgroup postings. Use your dialup username: username@acmenet.net and your password when prompted for.




NNTP is the protocol used for sending Usenet messages.  It means "Network News Transfer Protocol".
